Roof algae treatment addresses the black streaks that run down roof slopes across Greater Victoria. These streaks are caused by blue-green algae (Gloeocapsa magma), a microorganism that feeds on the limestone filler in asphalt shingles. It is not dirt, and it will not rinse off with water.
Gloeocapsa magma is an airborne cyanobacterium that lands on roofs and feeds on the calcium carbonate in asphalt shingles. It spreads as spores are washed down the roof slope by rain, creating the characteristic black streaks.
The streaks are most visible on north-facing slopes and in shaded areas where the roof surface stays damp longer — ideal conditions for algae growth in Victoria's coastal climate.
IDENTIFY. TREAT. RELEASE.
Algae treatment applies a controlled solution at low pressure that kills the organism at the surface. Unlike moss, algae is relatively quick to respond — treated streaks often lighten visibly and release through subsequent rain exposure.
No scrubbing. No high pressure. The chemistry targets the algae, not the shingle beneath it.
